38th annual WADA
Workshop
has plenty to
offer attendees

There are plenty of choices for those attending
the 38th annual WADA Workshop during the few days in which the event will be
held in Appleton in
early November.
The theme for the 2004 Workshop is “Coaching
Coaches,” and the
event will be held Nov. 7-9 at the Paper Valley Hotel in downtown Appleton.
Among the highlights will be the two featured
speakers: Kevin Borseth, the
women’s basketball coach at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay; he will
give the keynote address on “Coaching Coaches” for the Opening General
Session on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 7.
Dr. Gregory
A. Dale, associate professor and sport psychology consultant at Duke
University in Durham,
North Carolina; he will give a keynote address on “Developing the Credible
Coach – a Model
for Success” on Monday morning, Nov. 8.
Also included on the opening day will be
Leadership Training Courses: 501 Philosophy, Leadership, Organization and
Professional Programs; 504 Legal Issues and Risk Management, and, 505
Innovative Methods of Mentoring and Problem Solving. The Certified Athletic Administrator
Exam will also be offered.
Later in the afternoon on the first day will be
the Fall Caucus for each District, and elections will be held in Districts 2,
4 and 6. The Distinguished Service Awards Banquet will be Sunday evening, and
the WADA will honor individuals representing each District across the state.
Also on Monday, the day starts with a meeting for
“new” AD’s, and there will be a
Spouse-Guest Breakfast & Activity called “It’s a Surprise Party.” There also is a Middle School AD’s
Caucus and election, plus a Women’s AD Caucus.
There will be four time slots of Mini-Sessions
which offer Workshop attendees choices of: Seeding, by Deb Hauser of the WIAA; Rules at a Glance, by
Tom Shafranski of the WIAA; Taking your Coaches Beyond the X’s and O’s, by
Mel Roustio, who has been a teacher, coach and athletics administrator plus
an author of a top-selling book in Illinois; Parents of Student-Athletes –
Helping Them Maintain a Proper Perspective, by Dr. Gregory Dale; Get in the
Fast Lane with WACPC, by Tamie Nielson, Wendy Johnson and Darcell Salm;
Hy-Tek, by Marcy Thurwachter of the WIAA; Coach Athlete Summer Contact, by
Dave Anderson of the WIAA; Tour the WADA web site, by Mike Bates, Information
Coordinator for the WADA;
Developing an Activities Code, by Bryan Yaeger of Reedsburg;
Recruiting Realities, by Jack Renkens; Developing a Passion in our Coaches,
by Mike Blair of Chippewa Falls, and, Drug Testing and Implementation, by
Brian Smith of Waunakee.
The WADA Awards Luncheon will also take place on
Monday. Daron Sutton, the voice
of the Milwaukee Brewers, will be the Master of Ceremonies. The following awards will be
presented:
those receiving WADA Years of Service recognition, the Andy
Anderson Award, the NIAAA State Award of Merit, the Retired Athletic Director
Award of Merit, the NFHS Citation Nominee award, District Athletic Directors
of the Year awards, and, the State Athletic Director of the Year award.
Later on Monday afternoon will be more LTC
options: 502 Principals
Strategies and Methods, 506 Legal Issues 2 Title XI Sexual Harassment, ADA
and Employment Law, and, 516 Administration of Physical Plant Assets.
The “NFL Monday Night Football Party” will close
out the day.
On Tuesday, the day begins with a Fellowship of
Christian Athletes Breakfast, featuring Dennis Krause, a former WTMJ-TV
sportscaster in Milwaukee who is now at Concordia University. He will speak on “Dealing with
Adversity.”
The WADA Annual Meeting will be held Tuesday morning, with
highlights being the election of a new WADA Vice President,
plus a review and a vote regarding the proposed WADA Constitution amendments.
The WIAA Open Forum will follow, with members of
the WIAA Executive Staff on hand for the session.
The Wind-up Luncheon will include the Passing of
the
WADA Presidency from current President Pete Miller of Merrill
to President-Elect Mark Kryka of Verona.
