Carl Eggebrecht congratulated and listed all the winter state competitors – team and individual – from District 4.

Don Swanson should be notified of any retired AD’s change of address or if any retired AD has passed away.

2. Michael Bates was introduced as the new WADA Information Coordinator.   Members were encouraged to submit articles for the WADA newsletter via e-mail to: mbates1@new.rr.com.

3. District 4 Athletic Director of the Year:  tie = Gene Strusz (Fox Valley Lutheran), nominated by Brian Matz (Kimberly), and Don Tolkacz (Pulaski), nominated by Kathy Bates (Xavier).  After a district-wide e-mail vote, Don Tolkacz (Pulaski) was selected this year’s recipient.  Gene Strusz (Fox Valley Lutheran) will be a nominee at the 2005 district spring caucus.

4. District 4 Distinguished Service Award:  Jerry Krueger, nominated by Brad Jodarski (Oshkosh West).  Also nominated: Collette Kolstad (Preble) nominated Tom Gauthier and Dave Steavpack (Ashwaubenon) nominated Don Maslinski.

5. WADA Reminders:

Elections for District 4 will take place at the fall WADA workshop.

Members were encouraged to consider running for WADA Vice-President.  Past-President Don Tolkacz (Pulaski) explained the benefits and time commitments of the position.  Greg Smith (West De Pere) expressed a possible interest.

Members were also reminded of several items:

A.     the WADA golf outing in Wisconsin Rapids on July 20, 2004.

B.     the fall WADA workshop in Appleton on November 7-8-9, 2004.

C.     Leadership training classes and the CAA exam will be offered in Wisconsin Rapids the day before the golf outing as well as at the WADA workshop in the fall.

D.     the WIAA Annual Meeting will be at Holidome in Stevens Point on April 21, 2004.

6. District 4 Vacation Door Prizes:  Carl Eggebrecht (Waupaca) suggested that the different conferences in the district rotate the responsibility of obtaining the vacation door prizes for the Tuesday WADA luncheon.  The Valley 8 Conference procured the prizes for the 2003 workshop.  No other conference volunteered at this time.

7. WIAA Issues:

A.     Girls basketball tournament returns to the Kohl Center in 2005.

B.     Four consecutive days allowed for summer contact with football players.

Members requested that the WIAA provide clear guidelines prior to the annual meeting.  The group as a district supported to deny the issuance of football equipment in the summer, hoping that the summer contact days would NOT be full contact.

C.     Five contact days (non-consecutive) approved for soccer and volleyball, with the expectation for more sports to request the same.

8. NIAAA News:

National workshop will be held December 10-14, 2004, in New Orleans.

9. New Business:

A.     Group was satisfied with the vendors at the fall WADA workshop.

B.     Unanimous interest in developing a scholarship to WADA members’ children.

C.     Kathy Bates (Xavier) volunteered to serve on a committee to develop criteria for the scholarship.

D.     A lengthy discussion ensued regarding cheer and dance competition.  Summary:

Gene Strusz (Fox Valley Lutheran) wants the WIAA to recognize and regulate cheer and dance as sports.  Ed Zepka (Appleton West) reported that 26 states have cheer and dance as part of their athletic sport offerings.  Currently, the WIAA endorses the regional and state competitions run by the WACPC.  However, the WACPC does not have the same regulations for their athletes as the WIAA does.  Additionally, members thought the regional and state competition classes should be separated by school size rather than squad size. Gene Strusz (Fox Valley Lutheran) handed out a proposal for season regulations for both sports.

10. Next Spring Caucus:  Wed., April 13, 2005, 9:30 a.m. @ Mark’s East Side Restaurant, 1405 E. Wisconsin Ave., Appleton.
