WISCONSIN
ATHLETIC DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION (WADA)
Randy
Johnson from Durand introduced his principal, Stephan Plank. Two interns were introduced, Kristen
Rymer from Sparta and Jenny Larkin from Holmen. First Year AD’s were recognized: Lance Bagstad-Bangor; Tim
Schuette-Portage; Dave
Hedgepath-Baraboo; and Kyle Cronan-Necedah. There
were 39 members in attendance:
Congratulations
were extended to all the schools that participated in individual and team state
tournament competition. Hillsboro, Baraboo, G-E-T and Holmen identified
specific accomplishments of individual athletes and teams.
Michael
Bates is the new WADA secretary and Webmaster. His e-mail address is: mbates1@new.rr.com. AD’s
are encouraged to write articles about areas of insight and expertise they
might have pertaining to serving as an athletic/activities director, and to
submit those to Mike for the WADA website.
The
courses being offered this summer at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School on
Monday, July 19, 2004 will be LTC 501-Philosophy (12-4pm); LTC 508-Management
(12-4pm); and LTC 3-Citizenship (5-9pm).
The CAA
exam will be offered at the Ridges Golf course on Tuesday, July 20, 2004
(8-11am).
The
Summer Golf Outing will be held on Tuesday, July 20, 2004 at the Ridges Golf
course, Wisconsin Rapids (12pm).
Registration deadline is July 9 to Bill Vickroy @ Wisconsin Rapids
Lincoln High School. Cost is $75. The
Retired AD’s Golf Outing is September 21, 2004 at the Evergreen Golf Course,
Elkhorn. Contact Chuck Colthardt @
Whitewater for more information.
Cost $45.
The WADA Fall
Workshop will be held November 6-9, 2004 at the Paper Valley Hotel,
Appleton. Sign up sheets were
available to serve as a presenter or presider. John
Frizzell-WI Dells provided information on the Kalahari Resort, a large facility
with 350 rooms and another 350 expected to be completed by this fall. He noted there were plenty of meeting
rooms and that the main dining room could handle well over 400 people. The resort also includes shops and an
indoor/outdoor water park. John
has a contact at the facility and previous groups commented on the excellent
rates. Miles
Oakey talked about how the Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton is becoming too small
and that last year, WADA had to turn away 30 vendors. A straw pole at the D-3 meeting indicated that many AD’s
feel the Paper Valley Hotel is too small for AD’s who wish to attend along with
vendors. D-3 AD’s support serious
consideration to move the workshop to a different facility that can accommodate
the WADA workshop participants and the vendors as well as being a family
friendly atmosphere.
LTC
501-Philosophy; LTC 504-Legal Issues 1; LTC-505-Mentory and the CAA Exam will
be offered on Sunday, November 7, 2004 LTC
502-Principles; LTC 506-Legal Issues 2; LTC 516-Physical Plan will be offered
on Monday, November 8, 2004.
Bryan
Yager-Reedsburg suggested that there should be guidelines for the packages,
such as a dollar amount limit that is set for all District Door Prizes. He also thought that conferences could
work together to develop a package.
Linzi asked if there was any conference interested for Fall 2004
workshop and Graeme Williams-Royal volunteered. Joe Beran-La Crosse Central suggested that a rotating
schedule might work so every conference has a turn. The group would like a list of conferences in the
district/regional area and then Linzi could contact several to work together on
a package.
For
Summer 2005, LTC 502-Principles; LTC 507-Assessment; LTC 503-Citizenship will
be offered. For Fall
2005, LTC 501-Philosophy; LTC 515-Physcial Plant; LTC 520-Character in
Coaching; LTC 504-Legal Issues 1; LTC 511-Budget/Fund Raising; and LTC
514-Challenging Personalities will be offered. Three D-3
AD’s indicated an interest in taking LTC 590-Instructional Methods to become an
LTC instructor. There was a
comment made that some people who had taken the LTC 590 course were never
selected to instruct.
Linzi
talked about how MN gives out scholarships to their own member families that
have gifted student-athletes.
After discussion, it was felt that the AD’s would like more information
on the following areas before making a decision: 1) Criterion for each applicant; 2) Criteria to make
selection; 3) Dollar amount; 4) Selection Committee make-up and; 4) Regional or
Statewide awards. Joe
Beran-La Crosse Central noted that if each district gave $500.00, it would cost
WADA $3,500 per year. Currently the coulee conference holds a scholar banquet
and it was suggested that maybe WADA could do the same.
It was
noted that there appears to be more vendor interest than space. Miles Oakey noted that last year some
of the vendors had trouble securing rooms. Linzi asked if anyone had any problems in working with
vendors on supply orders or any other concerns. The only concern mentioned came from Steve Balda (retired)
who noted that over half of the vendors were gone before WADA gave out the door
prizes and if the vendors advertise hours, they need to stay till the end. A straw pole indicated that the
majority of D-3 AD’s purchase something from at least one vendor who was
represented at WADA.
The WIAA
Annual Meeting will be held on April 21, 2004 at the Holiday Inn in Stevens
Point, 9:00 a.m.
a. Girl’s Basketball Tournament Site If the
coaches prefer a different site than the Kohl Center (i.e. UW Fieldhouse) than
why can’t the State Tournament be held there? b. Conference Commissioners It was
noted that Conference Commissioners were concerned that they had not received
notification from the WIAA when the decision was made to change the girl’s
basketball schedule for 2004-05. c. WIAA E-Mail Contact The
athletic directors like e-mail reminders from WIAA and would prefer downloading
forms into word because it is easier to edit and fill the answers in. d.
Summer Contact Summer
contact needs to be done by July 31st.
The 4 consecutive program days for football need to be the same for all
levels. Volleyball and Soccer have
5 days, that do not need to be consecutive, but all 5-dates must be the same
for all levels. There was
still some confusion on what “contact” actually meant. The following were questions that Linzi
will forward to the WIAA for clarification: 1) Can a coach take the team to camp? 2) Does going to a camp equal
competing? 3)
Can you handpick players to go to camp?
4) Can school funds be used for these program days? 5) Who is responsible for the financial
management of camps? Can it be the
coach? 6) What can be done with
this money from camps the coaches are making? 7) More information is needed regarding how funds raised by
teams and coaches can or cannot be managed. 8) Coaches run
youth camps/clinics. Can that
money go through a school account managed by the coach? Can coaches pay themselves or their
staff (students, parents, other coaches) a stipend for running the
camp/clinic?
Linzi
asked the group that if they are not receiving e-mails from her or would prefer
the information in a different format, to please let her know.
Linzi
asked if anyone was interested in running for Vice President of WADA. The
deadline is October 1, 2004. The
position involves a 4-year commitment and at least 6 Board meetings a
year. Anyone interested please let
Linzi Gronning know.
There were three people nominated for distinguished service
award. Rollie
Hall-River Falls nominated Kirby Simes; Linzi Gronning-Holmen nominated
Holmen’s booster club; and Rich Roginski-Eleva Strum, nominated Garry
Hageness. Kirby Simes was
selected for the Distinguished Service Award.
Mark
Froehle-Eau Claire Memorial nominated Dave Turner-Eau Claire North. There were no other nominees and a
unanimous ballot was cast for Dave Turner.
The NIAAA
National Workshop will be held at the Marriott, New Orleans, LA December 10-14, 2004.
